La Serena is a city and capital commune of IV the Region of Coquimbo, Chile. Form leaves from the Province of Elqui and limits the south with Coquimbo and Andacollo, to the north with the Fig tree, the west with the Pacific Ocean and the east with Vicuña. One is in the South hemisphere of America, to 29°54’28” S of latitude and 71°15’15” Or length. It is an important tourist site, specially during the summer, where people are going to visit her beaches. The central house of the University of La Serena is in her and, in addition, she is host of the Arquidiócesis of La Serena, one of the five catholic arquidiócesis of Chile.

History

Juan Bohón with the name of Villanueva of La Serena was founded by the Captain, although he discusses the exact date, being indicated like the 15 of November or 30 of December of 1543 and the 4 of September of 1544 probable. Many historians indicate simply that he was founded on 1544.

Five years later, at night from the 11 to the 12 of January of 1549, and when just he began to lay the foundations his history, a revolt of the natives he causes the death to almost all the Spaniards (escaping, apparently only a called survivor Juan Cisterns), destroying and setting afire the town.

The 26 of August of 1549, by order of Pedro de Valdivia, the Captain Francisco de Aguirre refunda the city under the name of San Bartholomew of La Serena (present patrono of the city), in the same place where today the Seat of Arms rises. Time later, the 4 of May of 1552, king Carlos of Spain confers by real certificate the title to him from city to the town of La Serena.

In as much, the city undergoes the continuous attacks of the privateers, being Francis Drake that would open the route from the Pacific to the privateers towards 1578. Bartholomew Sharp, who burned it partly and sacked in 1680, and Edward Davis, which in 1686 he set fire to the convent of Santo Domingo, cause great fear in the population, forcing to the fortification of Large city in 1700. In addition, he underwent an almost total destruction, product of an earthquake, the 8 of 1730 July.

During the Revolution of 1859 (rebellion against the preservative government), the city was taken by the forces led by Pedro Leon Rooster, until again it was occupied by the army of Santiago, when defeating this one to the forces of Rooster in the battle of the Great Hill.

In 1920, a new economic height by the mining of the iron begins to be developed, the one that attracts capitals and human contingent, originating a new change in the urban structure.

Between 1948 and 1952 it begins to be developed the "Calm Plan", project in which one renews the urban city with investments and remodelings that would imprimirían a unique seal to him in the country. Thus it begins to hold fast in the roll of services, to rescue and to develop an own architectonic style, denominated Colonial Renaissance.

At the moment, the city enjoys an own architectonic style (well-known like "Neocolonial"), which in front of characterizes it the other cities of the country, conserving old constructions of colonial style, being many of them important National Monuments.

Demography and climate

The commune has a surface of 1,892.8 km², in that they lived, according to the data that are come off the 2002 census, 160,148 inhabitants, of who 77,385 were men and 82,763 were women. The variation in population with respect to 1992 was of 32,6%. On the total, 147,815 inhabitants live in urban areas and 12,333 in rural areas. In the city of La Serena, properly so, they inhabit 155,815 people, according to the National Institute of Statistics of Chile, with the 2002 census.

Sectors

La Serena in the ultimos 20 years has grown in a required 100%[cita ]. The city is divided commonly in diverse sectors.

To the north are the sectors of the Companies, subdivided in two denominated subsectors Company High and Low Company. In the proximity is the Creek San Pedro. To the south are the sectors of Pampas, San Joaquin and the sector the Miracle. To the east they are the sectors of the Antenna, Juan XXIII, Florida, Hill the Pine and University District. And, finally, to the west is the sector of the Avenue of the Sea.

Climate

The climate of La Serena is one of calmest of the north of the country. With a temperature average of 17°C arriving minima during the winter (Mayo-Agosto) at 6ºCs and in summer (Octubre-Febrero) raising until the 25ºCs and the 250 precipitations that do not surpass mililiter, one active agriculture is developed in the adjacent zones, that is based on the horticulture and fruitgrowing of papaya.

Economy

Today La Serena experiences a noticeable development around the tourism.

It excels his great variety of cultural and natural resources, between which are totally beautiful decontaminated beaches throughout the attractive Avenue of the Sea, pure air, ideal climate and attractive places to enjoy; avenues, parks, etc. All it is conjugated with the cultural presence through the existence of museums, architecture, crafts and folclore.

In this city they are located branch of the chains of more important multistores of the country, Mall Seat La Serena, that albega to 2 from the most important stores at national level Falabella and Paris supermarkets, supermarkets and stores for the home and the construction, such as, Jumbo, Leader, Ripley, Santa Isabel, Deca, Jonhsons Mega, Easy and Homecenter Sodimac.

Tourism

The beaches of the Avenue of the Sea conform one of the strolls more concurred of La Serena, uniting the Monumental Light, in South direction with an extension of 6 km and adjacent with the beach of Peñuelas (Coquimbo).

This avenue includes 12 beach sections known like: The Light, the Forts, Bellwether, White, the Boat, 4 Corners, Navy, the Fisherman, the Privateer, Seahorse, the Gulls and Song of the Water. All of them are apt for the nautical bath and sports.

In Last years the Festival of La Serena (created in the 2004) has been acquiring importance to national level, due to the great quality of its invited artists.

Transport

The Calm account with average diveros of transports that they communicate downtown with the outlying areas, such as, collective taxis, taxis and microbus.

Also it counts on a Terminal of Bus, that allows to the transport from La Serena to great part of the country and an Airport, with daily flights to Santiago, Antofagasta, Arica, and other destinies.

Sports

This city counts on a called football team Sports La Serena and plays in the First Division of the Chilean league of soccer. This equipment plays of the premises in the Stage the Cover.

From 2007, a match of professional tennis of Challenger type gambles, exactly in the fields of the Trentino Campus of the "University of the Sea", in which his first champion was the Argentine tennis player Mariano Zabaleta.
